New mayor of Florence, Italy, is the first woman and first Jew to lead the historic city
Sara Funaro: First Jewish Woman Mayor of Florence
Jewish Identity and Political Career
Sara Funaro, the current mayor of Florence, has navigated the challenges of being a Jewish politician in Italy, balancing her beliefs with her responsibilities as a public servant.
She has publicly supported Israel and spoken out against antisemitism, but has also avoided placing her faith at the forefront of her platform.
Early Life and Religious Conversion
Funaro was raised without a formal religion but converted to Judaism in Brazil while working with underprivileged children.
"In reality, I didn't have a conversion: I embraced Judaism," she told the Corriere della Sera.
Political Involvement and Values
Funaro entered politics as a city councilor under Matteo Renzi's leadership. She has since championed causes of social justice, diversity, and inclusivity.
She has advocated for the underprivileged, established Florence's first mosque, and attended Pride parades, earning her a reputation as a progressive leader.
Response to Antisemitism
Funaro has condemned antisemitism both locally and globally.
During the Hamas attacks in 2023, she received police protection due to antisemitic threats. She has also stated that she fully supports the two-state solution.
Election as Mayor
Funaro's Jewish identity was not a major focus of her mayoral campaign.
According to Agnese Pini, editor-in-chief of La Nazione, Funaro's election as Florence's first Jewish mayor was more about her connections to the city and her history.
Future Prospects
Funaro's mayoral tenure could pave the way for a future in national politics.
"Serving as the mayor of Florence opens up many opportunities," said Pini.
Funaro, however, is committed to her current role and has said that she feels safe and supported in Florence, despite facing occasional attacks.
