Mayotte's Rebirth: From Devastation to Resilience

Prime Minister Bayrou's Urgent Mission

In the aftermath of Cyclone Chido, the most destructive storm to hit Mayotte in nine decades, Prime Minister Francois Bayrou has arrived in the ravaged territory to pledge support and initiate a path towards recovery.

"We understand that mere words are not enough," Bayrou said, acknowledging the deep wounds inflicted upon the people of Mayotte. "They need concrete actions, a tangible plan for rebuilding their lives and redefining their future."

Rebuilding from the Rubble

Two weeks after the storm, emergency services continue to restore essential services like water, power, and telecommunications. Bayrou announced a plan named "Mayotte standing," which will provide immediate relief and lay the groundwork for a long-term transformation.

"It's not just about rebuilding Mayotte as it was," Bayrou emphasized. "It's about creating a brighter and more sustainable future for this exceptional territory."

Addressing the Shadow Population

Estelle Youssouffa, a local MP, highlighted the insufficient support for Mayotte's undocumented migrant population, estimated to number between 100,000 and 200,000.

"These individuals, living in precarious conditions, have been disproportionately affected by the cyclone," Youssouffa said. "They deserve access to the same aid and assistance as every other citizen of Mayotte."

A Call for Accountability

Accompanied by a delegation of government officials, Bayrou witnessed the devastation firsthand, including the sprawling slums that were reduced to ruins by the storm.

"We cannot allow these mistakes to be repeated," declared Ambdilwahedou Soumaila, Mayor of Mamoudzou. "We must learn from this tragedy and strive for a more sustainable future."

Empathy and Action

Despite criticism for prioritizing local council meetings over Mayotte's urgent crisis, Bayrou has made it clear that his commitment to the territory is unwavering.

"We have brought with us 2.5 tonnes of aid supplies," Bayrou said. "But more importantly, we have brought our unwavering support and our determination to help Mayotte rise from the ashes."
